Furniture Friends is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides donated furniture to people in need throughout Greater Portland. With ongoing support from the community, we are able to fulfill our mission of “Creating Homes. Rebuilding Lives.”
Why We Do What We Do
Believe it or not, people are living in bare apartments–right here in Portland.
Right here in Portland? That’s not okay.
In 2019, Furniture Friends served over 550 households in need by providing the furniture that helped them create new homes for themselves. In so doing, we also supported them in beginning the process of rebuilding their lives.
By providing people with essential furniture, Furniture Friends:
- helps children get a good night’s rest by providing beds for them in which to sleep,
- provides comfort and security to people suffering from physical, mental, or other chronic illnesses,
- aids families fleeing war-torn countries in transitioning to permanent housing,
- supports people who have been homeless by helping create safe and stable housing,
- and, restores dignity and respect to veterans who’ve served our country and fallen on hard times.
How We Do It
Furniture Friends partners with over 120 local social service providers, hospitals, faith-based organizations, municipalities, and schools to identify people in need who lack the financial resources to purchase furniture on their own. Among the clients we serve are people who have struggled with homelessness and/or substance abuse as well as those living with physical and mental disabilities. We also serve veterans, survivors of domestic violence, and many immigrants beginning their new lives.
Following an in-home assessment, we welcome clients with access to transportation into our warehouse to select their furniture from our inventory. Alternatively, volunteer teams deliver furniture to clients without access to transportation.
Furniture Friends relies on the generosity of individuals and businesses to donate gently used furniture that serves as the essential building blocks of people’s homes.
