Logan Alexander
Program Director, 166 Riverside Shelter
Furniture Friends is an integral part of our goal to help our shelter residents transition into safe, permanent housing. It would be nearly impossible for individuals moving from an emergency shelter to establish independent living without the necessary furniture to create the comfort of a home. Simply put, without Furniture Friends, our residents would likely be sleeping, eating, and sitting on the floor in a bare apartment.
Those of us fortunate enough to have our own homes understand the significant cost associated with furnishing them. Brand new furniture is often prohibitively expensive, and even second-hand options can be too costly for those on severely restricted incomes. Furthermore, if someone does manage to find free furniture through local forums or curbside pickups, the condition is often unknown, transportation may be unavailable, and such items are quickly claimed.
Furniture Friends effectively removes these barriers by offering a convenient ‘one-stop shop’ experience, including a delivery option. Additionally, the Furniture Friends team has consistently been delightful to work with. Their deep commitment to their mission and the people they serve makes them an invaluable part of our community.
Please consider making a one-time or recurring gift this holiday season so that we can continue to provide these integral services for our social service partners across southern Maine.
