Furniture Friends is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides donated furniture to people in need throughout Greater Portland. With ongoing support from the community, we are able to fulfill our mission of “Creating Homes. Rebuilding Lives.”
Why We Do What We Do
Believe it or not, people are living in bare apartments right here in Portland.
Children are Sleeping on Floors
People Have No Place To Sit Down
Veterans without a dining table on which to serve dinner
homeless are threatened with the prospect of slipping back
Families who have escaped unimaginable traumas
Right here in Portland? That’s not okay.
In 2016, Furniture Friends served over 400 families and individuals in need by providing the furniture that helped them create new homes for themselves. In so doing, we were also helping them begin the process of rebuilding their lives.
How We Do It
Furniture Friends partners with local social service providers, hospitals, faith-based organizations, municipalities, and schools to identify people in need who lack the financial resources to purchase furniture on their own. Among the clients we serve are people who have struggled with homelessness and/or substance abuse as well as those living with physical and mental disabilities. We also serve veterans, survivors of domestic violence, many immigrants beginning their lives anew, as well as others.
Following an in-home assessment, we welcome clients into our warehouse to select their furniture. Alternatively, volunteer teams deliver furniture to clients without access to transportation.
Furniture Friends relies on the generosity of individuals and businesses to donate gently used furniture that can serve as the essential building blocks of a new home.
